Mimo
MiMo is a Percussion & Laptop duo exploring the relationship between
organic and organized sound. As order is brought to our sonic
environment, and melody, harmony and rhythm are deconstructed, the
lines between will vanish. A meeting of minds, a sounding board for
ideas, a platform of alternative vibrations, MiMo represents a forum
by which Matt Miller and Samuel Morgenstein expound upon current
events, the vast bounty of the world’s music, and finally, the ability
to converge all art forms into one – the kinship of creativity.

Ghost Eye
Dan Gaucher - laptop/sampling/drums
Steve Ward - trombone/electronics/iphone
Simeon Abbott - guitar/piano/kaossilator
Ghost Eye was formed in the summer of 2009 and since then have performed regularly in Toronto. The group's music began as a result of 3 musicians embracing technological extensions of their usual instruments in order to gently weave through many varieties of electronic and ambient music. Having met in various ad hoc improvising situations around Toronto, all three trio members felt that they could complement each other naturally. Their auspicious first performance at the Tranzac Tiki Room proved just such a situation to be the case (check it out here: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/2348418). Peaceful, sweeping and textured, the music does not rely on sudden dynamic shifts and spontaneity so much as on a composer-like approach from all three members and a desire to not "push" the sounds around too much. Performances usually develop gradually and logically while still possessing a level of excitement and unpredictability. All three members are regular fixtures at Somewhere There, and events hosted by the Association of Impovising Musicians of Toronto. They have performed in most of the cities music venues in this project or many others they are involved in separately. Ghost Eye first began performing along with a projectionist duo in December 2009; since then they have a definite integrated media sensibility. Both visual artists have been colleagues of the band for many years before joining and contribute a contribute a cohesive aesthetic.

Kyle Brenders Quartet
The Kyle Brenders Quartet is one of Toronto’s newest groups exploring the spaces between jazz and improvised music. Brenders, a former student of Anthony Braxton and Alvin Lucier, has brought together some of the most talented young players that are currently working in the Toronto scene. Along with Kyle, Mark Segger on drums, Steve Ward on trombone and Tomas Bouda on bass tap into their own creative instrumental vocabulary to communicate through Brenders’ distinctive compositional output. The energy of this group is balanced by technique and creative expression allowing the music to ebb and flow through extremely dynamic textures and forms.

Kyle Brenders Quartet – Opening for MATTHEW SHIPP TRIO
MATTHEW SHIPP TRIO
Matthew Shipp was born December 7, 1960 in Wilmington, Delaware. He started piano at 5 years old with the regular piano lessons most kids have experienced. He fell in love with jazz at 12 years old. After moving to New York in 1984 he quickly became one of the leading lights in the New York jazz scene. He was a sideman in the David S. Ware quartet and also for Roscoe Mitchell’s Note Factory before making the decision to concentrate on his own music.
Mr Shipp has reached the holy grail of jazz in that he possesses a unique style on his instrument that is all of his own- and he’s one of the few in jazz that can say so. Mr. Shipp has recorded a lot of albums with many labels but his 2 most enduring relationships have been with two labels. In the 1990s he recorded a number of chamber jazz cds with Hatology, a group of cds that charted a new course for jazz that, to this day, the jazz world has not realized. In the 2000s Mr Shipp has been curator and director of the label Thirsty Ear’s “Blue Series” and has also recorded for them. In this collection of recordings he has generated a whole body of work that is visionary, far reaching and many faceted .
Matthew Shipp is truly one of the leading lights of a new generation of jazz giants.
